A Scanner Darkly
I was an assistant lead animator on the award-winning film “A Scanner Darkly,” directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Richard Linklater (and adapted from a Philip K. Dick novel). My work on the film included auditioning and training animators, running a night crew of animators, and leading a team that animated all appearances of “Donna,” the character played by Winona Ryder. I also animated close-ups of “Barris,” played by Robert Downey Jr. The animations were created using Rotoshop, a proprietary graphics program utilizing a technique known as interpolated rotoscoping (animating over digital film). I drew the Donna images that were used for the teaser and movie posters. The animators worked in an Austin, Texas studio in which Linklater created a casual yet energetic atmosphere that fostered the cross-pollination of ideas and knowledge.
